Will I need to wear retainers after treatment?
Many of our patients ask whether they will need to wear retainers after they get their braces removed. While every case is different, the most typical answer is YES! In most cases, we will recommend that you wear your retainer at all times during the first four to six months following the removal of your braces. Following that period, Dr. Frugé will likely recommend that your retainer be worn at night. Wearing your retainer at night may last for a year or it may be necessary for an indefinite period of time. After your braces have done their job, you will want to keep your beautiful smile, and a retainer will help you reach that goal.
Wearing a retainer helps to keep your bite correct and your teeth in alignment. Many of our teenage patients forget from time to time to wear theirs, and while this is not ideal, a couple of nights without your retainer should not cause any serious problems. If you are experiencing discomfort, or are finding it difficult to remember to wear your retainer, let us know and we can work together to find a solution that works for you.
You should always remove your retainers when you eat and when you brush your teeth. Don't forget to take care of these appliances - you will need to make sure that you keep them fresh and clean! Some patients simply brush their retainers when they brush their teeth, while others soak theirs in denture solution or vinegar and water. Whichever process you choose, make sure that you keep your retainer clean and free of germs and bacteria.
Be sure to talk with your hygienist about retainer wear and care at your next appointment if you have any questions or concerns.
