Home Remedies for Sore Teeth After Getting Braces

Sore teeth from braces?

Home remedies for sore teeth after getting braces
Unfortunately, even the best orthodontists cannot ensure you won't experience any soreness after getting braces. Individuals who have recently had braces on their teeth may experience sensitivity and soreness on their gums, teeth or jaw. Luckily, there are some effective home remedies that can ease this mild pain.

Ice Application
Never underestimate the power of ice! The cooling effect of ice can reduce inflammation and soothe discomfort. Apply ice to your mouth just as you would to a sports injury, by wrapping it in a cloth or paper towel before applying it directly to your skin.

Drinking Cold Water
This remedy can be taken on the go, no matter where you are. If you experience any soreness after having braces applied, simply hold cold water in your mouth for a few moments before swallowing. The cool water will numb any pain and reduce inflammation in your mouth.

Forget Crunchy Snacks
After you first have your braces applied, it is best to avoid crunchy foods such as chips and hard candies. Opt for softer foods that won't irritate your mouth or require much chewing such as pudding, mashed potatoes, and smoothies.

Use Saltwater
Saltwater can reduce gum swelling by eliminating bacteria from your gums. Simply mix one or two tablespoons of salt with one glass of warm water and swish the solution around your mouth for 30 seconds.

Try a Gum Massage
Massaging your gums can stimulate blood flow and help identify areas of your gums that are in pain, so you can avoid them whilst eating/drinking. To make sure the method is effective, ensure you wash your hands and numb your gums with ice slightly before you begin massaging.

Hopefully one of the above home remedies will ease the soreness you experience post-braces application. Do not be discouraged by the idea of soreness, as it will eventually fade and you will forget you are even wearing braces. Remember, the process will be more than worth it when you reveal your new, straight smile to the world!
